Fleece Jazz
Fleece Jazz, which is widely regarded as East Anglia’s premier jazz club, has chosen to move its base to a stunning Constable Country location at the Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa. Fleece Jazz has run every Friday night for over 16 years and has hosted the very best of British; international singing stars have included Jamie Cullum, Mark Murphy, Clare Teal, Claire Martin, Jackie Dankworth, local girl Polly Gibbons and recently Lea Delaria. Instrumentalists appearing over the years include Sir John Dankworth M.B.E., Stan Tracey C.B.E., Michael Garrick, Avashai Cohen, Tommy Smith, Peter King, Gilad Atzmon and John Etheridge.
Fleece Jazz moved in July to its larger and more versatile home at the Stoke by Nayland Hotel, and the first performance at this exciting new venue was from internationally acclaimed guitarist Martin Taylor M.B.E. who appeared with singer Alison Burns and pianist David Newton, who played the very first gig run by Fleece Jazz at the Fleece Public House in Boxford in February 1993.
This popular Jazz club was recently recognised as the Best Jazz Venue in the UK at the prestigious 2009 Parliamentary Jazz Awards hosted by Paul Gambaccini at the House of Commons on 20th May. Past Chair, Michael Burgess said “We are obviously thrilled to have won this prestigious award. A rural Suffolk location may seem an unlikely home for a successful jazz club but by consistently booking the very musicians we have grown into not one of, but THE very best home of modern jazz in the country.”
The Jazz Club is entirely self-sufficient; it receives no grants or other support and is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. Any profits go back into providing the best equipment and employing the very best musicians the club can afford.
Matt Manning, a director at The Stoke by Nayland Hotel said, “We are really pleased that Fleece Jazz have received such a superb award and even more delighted that they have chosen to move to Stoke by Nayland. We are confident that the intimate ambiance of the jazz club will be maintained here and that Fleece Jazz audiences will enjoy the extensive range of services we are able to offer. These include a wide range of food and drink options and incredible overnight stay deals for those who wish to enjoy a drink or come from further afield.”
Jazz Club ticket holders can make a night of it and stay at the Stoke by Nayland Hotel for extra special rates which include free use of the excellent on site poolside and gym facilities. Call the Hotel reception on 01206 262836 for more information.
Anyone wishing to see the Fleece Jazz in action will need to call the box office on 01787 211865 and will be well advised to book early. Tickets are also available through www.WeGotTickets.com and more information can be found on the club’s website at www.fleecejazz.org.uk or call Michael Burgess on 01787 211123
